With a noble aim to provide best medical treatment to the poor and needy patient, with the consent of three young enthusiastic doctors to spare an hour or two twice in a week a small dispensary Sarvajanik Dharmarth Dawakhana under the auspices management of Saiyedpura Muslim Association was declared open on 30th May 1969.
Shri Hitendra Desai, the then Chief Minister of Gujarat state was the Chief Guest of the function and Hajee Ahmed Botawala the Managing Trustee of Botawala Charities, Rander was presided over the function.
Only 30 paise was charged for the Medicine and a Rupee one if an injection was to be given.
When the ground and first floor of the building was ready for use, the Sarvajanik Dharmarth Dawakhana of the Saiyedpur Muslim Association was shifted to the new building under new management.
The overwhelming response was received from all quarters soon it was felt to have our own indoor admission facilities, and to begin with, a land agreement was signed to purchase a small piece of land at a cost of Rs.30,000/- only to start 10 bed hospital. Unfortunately such a small amount could not be managed within a time limit of 3 months. Thus it may be considered as blessing in disguise otherwise the existing activities might have a dead end.
The original plan was to establish a 25 bed hospital and the estimated cost was only 4 lacs rupees.
Those were the days of financial hardship, independence agitation of South Africa hampered the economy of the South Africa which resulted in stringent financial restriction for foreign remittance and the National emergency in the country too delayed the construction work, ultimately on the 23rd October, 1977 when ground floor was ready for use, The Sarvajanik Dharmath Dawakhana of The Saiyedpura Muslim Association was shifted to newly constructed building as O.P.D. the initial department of the Hajee Ahmed Mohomed Lockhat and Dr. Ahmed Mohomed Moolla Sarvajanik Hospital under the management of The Sarvajanik Medical trust.
The beginning of the indoor department was made with 10 beds, Opthalmic & Obstetrics Gynaec were the first two departments when the first floor was completed during May-June 1978.
As and when other floors were completed gradually number of beds were added and new departments were started.
The operation theatre was the last mile-stone of construction work to be completed during 1981 but it was not the end of an era of historical development it was just the beginning, since the medical science being the fast growing branch of science, new techniques and the invention of new instrument out dates the previous one. This in turn demands replacement & fund for the same, even after 26 years we have to initiate on large scale innovation, reconstruction & renovation work.
We recollect the memory of door to door collection of one pound for building fund in U.K. and Organisation of All India Urdu Musha-era to raise only Rs.1,00,000 for installation of X-Ray unit. To day our donors are visiting the hospital, they study our requirement and help generously without any reservation.
At present we have 19 full-fledged departments and facilities of admission and operations for important branches of medicine like Urological, Neuro and Cancer Surgery, Mental problems.
A small dispensary started with the co-operation of three honorary doctors has reached to a stage of medical unit comprises of 15 full-time, 5 part-time, 4 super specialists, 47 eminent honorary consultants in various discipline of medicine and 23 medical assistants.
The charges of our hospital are nominal in comparison to the charge of the other charitable hospitals of the city. Over and above the nominal charges a very lenient free or partially free treatment is provided to the poor and needy patients. The provision of life saving drugs and infusion drips with co-operation of other organizations and our well-wishers is the another unique feature of this hospital.
